For students who would like to improve their English communication skills, Mission College offers three types of ESL (English as a Second Language) programs. Daytime, evening, Saturday, and online classes are available.

ESL Credit Program

The credit ESL program is for low-intermediate to advanced level students. Courses in grammar and writing, reading and vocabulary, and listening and speaking prepare students to successfully reach their goals. Optional courses in pronunciation, listening and culture, and English for Child Development are also available. Courses are $46 per unit.

Program Features
  • Highly experienced, educated, and helpful instructors
  • Five levels, high-beginning to advanced
  • Between 3-5 units of credit and hours of instruction per course
  • Fall and Spring courses 16 weeks
  • Winter and Summer courses 4-6 weeks
  • Certificate of proficiency for advanced students who complete the ESL Program
  • Tutoring is available through our Academic Support Center

ESL Credit is for students who want to:
  • Improve English skills and earn a certificate of proficiency to use towards a four-year college.
  • Improve English skills to get a better job.
  • Communicate more successfully in English in your personal life.
Cost

COST: $46 per unit plus fees for California residents. Non-California residents and international students are $265 per unit plus fees. Financial aid is available for students who qualify.

ESL for Non-Credit Program

The noncredit ESL program offers courses for low-beginning,  beginning, and high-beginning level students. Study reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary  Daytime, evening, and online classes are available. Courses are free.

  • Three levels: low-beginning, beginning, and high-beginning
  • Join a class at any time if space is available
  • No fees
  • No residency requirements
  • Students may need to purchase a textbook

ESL Noncredit is for students who want to:
  • Begin learning English right away.
  • Improve English skills and later enroll in Credit ESL.
  • Improve English skills to get a job or a better job.
  • Communicate better in English in everyday life.

Intensive English Program

The Institute of International Studies (iis.missioncollege.edu) is primarily for international students. IIS offers an innovative learning environment conducive to building academic, cultural, and language skills necessary for success in American college and professional settings.

Program features

Courses are offered at 4 proficiency levels, focusing on college preparation. No TOEFL or IELTS score is required. For more about our international program go to iis.missioncollege.edu.

  • 5 admission dates per year (January, March, May, August, October)
  • 8-week or 16-week sessions, 10 weeks in summer
  • 20 hours of instruction a week
  • 9 hours a week of lab instruction
